The Dollar Bay-Tamarack City Blue Bolts moved to 12-0 on the season with a 63-38 victory over Calumet on Tuesday.
The two teams came out of the jump ball fast and furious — almost too fast for the taste of Blue Bolts head coach Jesse Kentala.
“We were wild and undisciplined,” he said. “This game was the tale of two halves. I thought we played the worse first half of the year. We kicked the ball around and threw it away way too much. It was ugly.”
Despite the ugliness, the Blue Bolts led 17-8 after the first quarter.
The second period was a much calmer affair with the Copper Kings outscoring the Blue Bolts 11-10. It should have been more if the Copper Kings (2-8) would have made their shots. They missed one too many lay ups and shots in the paint. Their strong defense is what kept them in the game early on.
At half time, the score was 27-19 in favor of the Blue Bolts.
“I didn’t tell them to make any adjustments,” Kentala said. “We just needed to come out and play up to our standard.”
The Blue Bolts heeded his call. They outscored the Copper Kings 25-9 in the third quarter playing a much more controlled game on both ends of the court.
“Their (Blue Bolts) defense tighten up and forced turnovers,” said Calumet head coach Frank Bonacorsi. “They put in a couple of threes and the game got to be out of reach for us.”
Senior Ashton Janke led the scoring for the Bolts with 20. Junior Davin Hill followed with 17 which included three three-pointers. As a team, 33 points came from beyond the three -point arc for the Blue Bolts.
“Davin had a tremendous game for us,” Kentala said. “He handled the ball well for us and he shot well. He had a great night.”
Dryden Nelson led the Copper Kings with 10 points and Eli McParlan had eight.
The Blue Bolts will try to make it 13-0 when the Watersmeet Nimrods come to town on Thursday. The Copper Kings will face Chassell next Tuesday.
