Kings Outscored By Jeffers

The Jeffers Jets boys basketball squad continued their winning ways on Tuesday as they outscored the Calumet Copper Kings 55-42.

The Jets (6-3) had a big comeback win Monday against Lake Linden and it seemed that the momentum carried on up the road to Calumet for Tuesday’s victory.

It was all Copper Kings (2-5) for the first few minutes of the game. They took a 7-0 lead before the Jeffers’ Johnny Schutz hit a three ball at the 3:55 mark to put his team on the board. Before long the score was tied at seven and eventually 12-12 at the end of the first quarter.

“I liked that fact that we started off aggressive,” Jeffers head coach Trent Keteri said. “Our defense was strong as we kept them outside. For us though we were able to get the ball inside and we kept that up.”

In the second period the two teams traded shots with finding the bottom of the net for the Jets than the Copper Kings. They led 25-20 at half.

The third and the fourth both belonged to the Jets as thy outscored the Copper Kings 30-20 during that span. Johnny Schutz led the Jets with 21 points. He had four three pointers and was 5 of 5 from the free-throw line. Austin Kinnunen followed Schutz with 11 points. As a team, the Jets were an impressive 12-13 from the free-throw line.

In the final few minutes of the game, the Copper Kings had ample opportunites to catch the Jets and their 10-point lead. However, their shooting fell flat.

“I thought our boys battled hard and had plenty of good looks but we just weren’t making the baskets,” Calumet head coach Frank Bonacorsi said. “I was pleased with the effort particularly with our defense.”

Eli McParlan led the scoring for the Copper Kings with 20 points. Trevor Torola followed with 11.

The Copper Kings will face Houghton on Thursday. The Jets will play Republic-Michigamee on Tuesday, Feb. 4.
