The Copper Kings girls basketball team set the tone for their Tuesday night game against the Hancock Bulldogs in their first basket of the night – a three pointer.
It was their weapon of choice, making 10 of them as they went on to down the Bulldogs 59-42.
More than half of the Copper Kings points came from beyond the three-point arc. They shot an impressive 71.4 percent or 10 of 24 from long range. Junior Elli Djerf had four 3s of her 21 points. Teammates Ellen Sturos had three of her own and Marybeth Halonen was a perfect three for three from beyond the arc. On the night, the Copper Kings shot 43.8 percent.
“It all came together for them, and I give Calumet credit,” said Dan Pertile, head coach of the Bulldogs.
They were hitting step-back jumpers from the three-point line. What can you do.”
The Copper Kings (4-0) jumped out to a 15-0 lead after that first score. While Hancock (2-2) had the looks, they ball just could not find the net. Turnovers also hurt them. It was 25-5 in Calumet’s favor after the first eight minutes.
“I thought our girls played good defense and we didn’t have to work for shots,” said Calumet head coach Matt Laho. “They were leaving us open on the three-point line so our girls were going to shoot.”
The second quarter looked much the same as the Copper Kings pushed the lead to 17 with a 36-19 score at halftime.
In the third, the Bulldogs picked up their defensive pressure with a full-court press and while they forced a few turnovers, they couldn’t convert them into points.
“The hustle was there for our girls and the scrappiness was there,” said Pertile. “We had opportunities to score around the basket but we just didn’t finish.”
The closest the Bulldogs could get was a 12-point difference.
“When they are shooting that well it is hard to make up that difference,” Pertile said. “We have to do a better job of recognizing the shooters. If they are hot, we need to run them off the line, and we did not good job tonight.”
Senior D’Andra Kero led the Bulldogs with 13 points. Taylor Sebbas followed with eight.
