Calumet High School announced the winners of the George Gipp All-American Award for top male senior athlete and the Holly Jean McCullach Female Athlete Award. The winners were Matt Ojala and Celia Kiilunen.
Ojala earned 10 varsity letters during his time with the Copper Kings in football, basketball and track. He was named All Conference first team receiver and All-UP Large School receiver in 2018. He did all that while maintaining a 3.728 grade point average.
In basketball, Ojala was one of the most decorated athletes in school history, earning All-Conference second team in 2016, All-Conference First Team and All-UP Class ABC special mention in 2017.
In 2018, he was named WestPAC Player of the Year as well as a spot on the All-UP Class ABC First Team. He also earned BCAM’s Best Class C Award.
In 2019, Ojala was named to the All-Conference Dream Team and the All-UP All Class Dream Team. He earned BCAM’ Best Division 3 Award as well as the Detroit Free Press Third Team All-State.
He also earned Associated Press All-State Second Team honors while setting Calumet’s all-time career scoring record.
Kiilunen earned six varsity letters in volleyball, basketball and softball. She did all that while maintaining a 3.602 grade point average.
She was named All-Conference First Team and All-Region in volleyball in 2017.
She earned both of those honors again in 2018. She was also named WestPAC Player of the Year in 2018 while earning All-State Division 3 honorable mention.
In basketball, she earned All-Conference First Team honors in 2019.
