The Calumet Copper Kings boys basketball team needed a 17-point fourth quarter to force overtime on the road against the Ontonagon Gladiators. The push was all the momentum the Copper Kings needed as they followed with a 14-point effort in overtime to win, 63-51, Tuesday night.
The Gladiators fought hard for three quarters, taking a seven-point lead into the fourth, 39-32. Henry Menigoz scored all 14 of his points in the first three quarters. Ed Polakowski had 11 of his 18 points in that same stretch. Menigoz and Logan Latvis also hit four threes each.
“Ontonagon shot amazingly well tonight and control of us for three and a half quarters,” said Calumet coach Mike Ojala. “Fortunately, we amped it up late and were able to pull it out.”
Brandon Antilla and Travis Ojala both hit key threes in the fourth as the Copper Kings spread their offense around, getting points from five different players. They kept that balance in the extra session, getting points from four.
Travis Ojala finished with a team-high 16 points. Matt Ojala had 13 points, 14 assists and seven steals. Trevor Torola added 15 points.
